Examine the battlefield and the armies
Our historian explains the 1346 campaign and the encounter between Edward III’s army and the French force led under Philip of Valois. In The Footsteps Tours, we use the shape of the ground to discuss the opposing approaches and the English position. We consider how commanders used the landscape during the engagement, keeping the account tied to the places visited rather than relying on a narrative alone. Terrain shaped tactics.
Connect battlefield landmarks with the wider story
The day includes the Monument Jean de Luxembourg, the Lanterne des Morts, the English line, Crecy Windmill and the former wagon train site. In The Footsteps Tours, we also visit the Abbaye de Valloires, associated in the draft itinerary with care for wounded men. The route travels from London through Folkestone and Calais, allowing us to explore related locations before returning via the evening Eurotunnel crossing. We cross into France.
