Understand the planning and technology of the raid
Wing Commander Guy Gibson led 617 Squadron during Operation Chastise, which used a purpose-built bouncing bomb against dams in Germany. In The Footsteps Tours, we explain the purpose of the weapon and the choices involved in attacking each target. Our historian sets the raid within the squadron’s formation and wartime role, helping visitors understand how the plan relied on aircraft, crews, training and the design of the dams. Training mattered.
Visit the three dam locations and related sites
We visit the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams, with Schloss Waldeck providing a viewpoint over the Edersee and its dam. In The Footsteps Tours, we also include Arnsberg, where the squadron’s later activities form part of the story. The two-day itinerary starts at Dortmund Airport and travels through the region by dedicated vehicle, with an overnight stay near the Mohnesee and a return transfer to the airport. We trace operations.
