Explore the evidence of Viking and Saxon warfare
At Sutton Hoo, we examine burial evidence and the material culture associated with early English rulers. In The Footsteps Tours, we connect these finds with the weapons, ships and landscapes that help explain warfare in this period. We also consider how archaeology changes historical understanding, giving context to familiar depictions in television and film without treating screen drama as a substitute for evidence or the surviving record. Evidence remains central.
Follow the campaigns across northern England
Our route links Torksey, York, Fulford, Stamford Bridge and Repton to show how the balance of power shifted across generations. In The Footsteps Tours, we place military events alongside settlement, leadership and burial traditions, from the Great Viking Army’s winter camp to the battles of 1066. With a battlefield historian guiding each visit, we connect individual locations to the wider contest for control of England. We relate warfare to settlement.
