Follow the American airborne route along Hell’s Highway

Our route links Joe’s Bridge, Valkenswaard, Eindhoven, Son, Grave, Groesbeek and Nijmegen to show how the American airborne operations related to XXX Corps’ advance. In The Footsteps Tours, we explain the bridges, drop zones and roads within the plan to move towards Arnhem. We use the ground to discuss the distances between objectives and the problems created when progress depended on a sequence of crossings being secured. Distances shape movement.

Trace the British airborne fighting around Arnhem

We follow the British 1st Airborne Division from the landing zones at Heelsum and Wolfheze towards Oosterbeek and Arnhem Bridge. In The Footsteps Tours, we cover Route Leopard, the Oosterbeek perimeter, the Hartenstein area and the withdrawal across the Neder-Rijn. Cemetery and museum visits provide further context for the fighting and its aftermath, helping connect the plan’s objectives with the experience of the troops who reached Arnhem. We trace retreats.
