Understand the American advance through the Argonne
The campaign required the American Expeditionary Force to move through German defensive works towards the rail hub at Sedan. In The Footsteps Tours, we examine the actions around Vauquois Hill, Varennes-en-Argonne, Cheppy and the Haute Chevauchee, relating preserved trenches and memorials to the wider offensive. Our historian also sets the campaign’s human cost in context, including the casualties recorded over six weeks of sustained fighting in difficult terrain. Resistance continued.
Visit sites linked to the Lost Battalion and Sergeant York
We walk in the Argonne Forest near the Lost Battalion Monument, then visit the Sergeant York Memorial at Chatel-Chehery, Montfaucon and Romagne-sous-Montfaucon. In The Footsteps Tours, we connect these stories with the actions of the 77th, 79th, 32nd and 4th Divisions. The itinerary concludes at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, bringing battlefield visits together with a place that records the names and graves of American service personnel. Service remembered.
