Understand the German offensive in the Ardennes
The tour begins with the opening attacks across the Ardennes and the attempts by German formations to break through American positions. In The Footsteps Tours, we follow the Northern Shoulder and the route associated with Kampfgruppe Peiper, then consider the advance towards Saint-Vith and the Meuse. Our historian explains how defensive positions, roadblocks and the winter landscape influenced the pace and direction of the fighting. We examine winter roads closely.
Explore the defence and relief of Bastogne
We examine the fighting around Bastogne, the role of the 101st Airborne and 10th Armored Divisions, and the relief by Patton’s Third Army. In The Footsteps Tours, we also visit locations associated with the German advance and the counterattacks that pushed the salient back. With Bastogne as the base for much of the itinerary, the route connects local defensive actions with the wider Allied response to the offensive. Patton arrived.
